Title
RECOGNIZING MAY AS BICYCLE AWARENESS MONTH
Body
WHEREAS, the month of May has been established nationally to recognize both the need for and value in the bicycle as both a means of transportation and valuable recreational activity; and
WHEREAS, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission as early as 1977, recognized the need for Regional Bikeway Planning, and in the 1994 update, recommended a 730 mile regional bikeway system utilizing corridors along rivers, railroads, utility easements and roadways to give cyclists convenient access to residential areas, places of employment and neighborhood activity centers. This recommendation has led to a commitment on the part of local jurisdictions to build seven to eight miles or bikeways each year; and
WHEREAS, this Council and Administration have already constructed several miles of bike way proper, signed and designated fifteen miles of City streets as bike routes, have mapped the potential need for another five miles of bikeway and bike routes, and have published and distributed a printed pass out with maps and explanations of the Bike Route System.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That this Council and Administration recognize May as Bicycle Awareness Month, and urge the citizens of Gahanna to take advantage of the many scenic routes available by bicycle in and around the City of Gahanna.
Section 2. That this Council commends the Administration, Parks and Recreation Department, Park Board and especially the Gahanna/Jefferson Bicycle Advisory Board for their efforts toward making this a more Bicycle Friendly Community.
Section 3. That this resolution shall be in full force and effect at the earliest period allowed by law.
