TITLE

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE, JANUARY 16, 2023

BODY

 

WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed nationally on the third Monday of January to honor the birthday of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights activist who championed nonviolent and anti-poverty activism in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s; and

 

WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was enacted on November 2, 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill proposed by Representative Katie Hall of Indiana to create a federal holiday honoring King; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. urged us to action, stating: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”; and

 

WHEREAS, this Council wishes to honor the legacy of King and the National Day of Service in the City of Gahanna, by encouraging its residents to improve the community by organizing, volunteering, and spreading the message of equality.

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF OHIO:

 

Section 1. That this Council does hereby recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as January 16, 2023, as the MLK Day of Service in the City of Gahanna.

 

Section 2.  That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect at the earliest period allowed by law.
