A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING OCTOBER 2023 AS PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF GAHANNA
BODY
WHEREAS, in the United States, one out of every four pregnancies ends in miscarriage and one in every 175 pregnancies ends in stillbirth; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, the U.S. Congress and President Ronald Reagan designated the month of October nationally as “Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month”; and
WHEREAS, October is recognized nationally to bring awareness to the tragedy of pregnancies ending in miscarriages, stillbirths, or the passing of newborn babies and to enable individuals and communities to consider how to meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members; and
WHEREAS, promoting awareness of pregnancy and infant loss not only increases the likelihood that grieving families will receive understanding and support, but also results in improved education and prevention efforts which may ultimately reduce the incidence of these tragedies; and
WHEREAS, this Council recognizes the impact that pregnancy and infant loss has on one’s physical, mental, and emotional health and the health of the community at large; and, furthermore, this Council recognizes that all in the community can play a vital role in extending friendship and support to the courageous parents and families who are navigating the bereavement and trauma from pregnancy and infant loss.
