WHEREAS, with the events of the September 11, 2001 tragedy many members of the National Guard and Reserves are being called to active duty; and

WHEREAS, these City of Gahanna employees will not receive the same salary that they do at their current jobs, and it is a great deal less; and

WHEREAS, it is important that the City of Gahanna support these employees who are defending our freedom and our way of life; and

WHEREAS, the Administration has requested that the City make up the difference between the salary paid by the military and the salary they receive as City employees; and

WHEREAS, this will only apply to those members of the National Guard and Reserves who are called up specifically because of the September 11, 2001 tragedy through November 30, 2003; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative to move forward with this ordinance all for the preservation of the public peace, health, safety and welfare;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:

Section 1. That the Director of Finance is hereby authorized to pay any City of Gahanna employees called to active duty in a federal status specifically because of the September 11, 2001 tragedy the difference between what the military would pay them and their salary as a City employee.

Section 2. That funding to cover the salaries was appropriated in the 2002 Appropriations, and is in the 2003 proposed Appropriations.

Section 3. That this provision will apply to a call to active duty in a federal status through November 30, 2003.

Section 4. That health insurance will be covered by the military and not by the City of Gahanna, and there will be no pension accrual...
