TO SUPPORT THE KIDS VOTING PROGRAM

Body

WHEREAS, voter participation is one of the key measures of civic engagement and strongly correlates to community vitality, quality of education and responsiveness of democratic institutions; and

 

WHEREAS, the fact that more than half of all children now live in a household where no adult votes and that underscores the need for reinvigorating citizenship; and

 

WHEREAS, Kids Voting is the only program in the nation that combines hands-on civic education and the experience of actually voting; and

 

WHEREAS, Gahanna Jefferson Local School District is a participant in the Kids Voting program and students at Gahanna Lincoln High School staff the polling places for Kids Voting; and

 

WHEREAS, Gahanna Jefferson Local School District is the only school district in the country where students organize and staff the polling places; and

 

WHEREAS, through this non-partisan, civic campaign, students and adults in Central Ohio will make a "Kids Voting Pledge for Democracy" to honor our country by taking their responsibilities as a citizen in a democracy seriously by registering to vote, getting informed, voting and staying involved in the self-government of our communities;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:

 

Section 1.  That this Council and Administration recognizes the importance of the KIDS VOTING program.

 

Section 2.  That KIDS VOTING has shown an exemplary commitment to furthering their goal of creating good citizens and informed, lifelong voters.

 

Section 3.  That this Council and Administration urge the involvement of the family, the community and the schools in this program - before, during and after Election Day.

 

Section 4.  That this resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon passage by this Council.
