TITLE
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JANUARY AS NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH
BODY
WHEREAS, the month of January is recognized and celebrated as Blood Donor Month; and
WHEREAS, Blood Donor Month is an opportunity to recognize the approximately 3% of the U.S. population who donates blood each year; and
WHEREAS, on December 31, 1969, President Richard M. Nixon proclaimed January 1970 as the first National Blood Donor Month to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors and encourage new donors to join; and
WHEREAS, each year, approximately 13.6 million units of whole blood and red blood cells are collected in the United States; and
WHEREAS, according to the American Red Cross, approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells, 5,000 units of platelets, and 6,500 units of plasma are needed every day in the U.S., resulting in a blood transfusion occurring every two seconds in America; and
WHEREAS, blood and platelets cannot be manufactured and can only come from donors, and a single donation can save multiple lives; and
WHEREAS, the City of Gahanna supports and thanks those who are able and willing to donate blood.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That this Council does hereby recognize January 2023 as Blood Donor Month for the City of Gahanna.
Section 2. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect at the earliest period allowed by law.
