RECOGNIZING MARCH AS MENTAL RETARDATION/DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS, all citizens desire and deserve the opportunity to feel and be a part of their community which includes their neighborhood, the workplace, and the schools; and
WHEREAS, our community can grow closer through education and understanding to benefit from recognizing not only each other's abilities, but our commonalties and differences; and
WHEREAS, this continuing trend toward better community access--both in architecture and attitudes--can help all to celebrate their uniqueness; and
WHEREAS, each of us has contributions to make simply because of who we are, and Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to focus on these thoughts through its theme for 1998:
"KEEPING DOORS OPEN FOR PERSONS WITH
MENTAL RETARDATION AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES."
WHEREAS, Northeast School and Arc Industries, Inc., located in Gahanna, provide for children and adults with mental retardation/developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, many businesses in the City of Gahanna have provided sites for community awareness and job skills for students attending Northeast School;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That the City of Gahanna recognizes March, 1998, as Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ARE OPENING DOORS EVERYWHERE!!
Section 2. That this Council and Administration commend local businesses and citizens that have focused on public awareness by openly accepting persons with mental retardation/developmental disabilities into community life.
Section 3. That this resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon passage by this Council and approval by the Mayor.
