TITLE
A JOINT PROCLAMATION AND RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MAY 3-10, 2025 AS HERB WEEK IN THE CITY OF GAHANNA
BODY
WHEREAS: National Herb Week was established by the International Herb Association in 1991 to celebrate and raise awareness of the many benefits of herbs, including their culinary, medicinal, and aromatic uses, as well as to support herbal businesses; and
WHEREAS: Herbs enhance our lives with their beauty, fragrance, and nutritional value, and promote a heathy lifestyle that can be sustained throughout a lifetime; and
WHEREAS: In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Gahanna became renowned for the exceptional quality and abundance of herbs grown by residents - leading residents to affectionately refer to the City as the "Herb Capital of Ohio"; and
WHEREAS: In 1972, Gahanna resident Jane "Bunnie" Geroux, with the support of Jo Ann Davidson - who later became the first female Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives - championed the formal recognition of this title, leading the Ohio General Assembly to pass a resolution officially declaring Gahanna the "Herb Capital of Ohio"; and
WHEREAS: To honor this legacy and celebrate its herbal heritage, Gahanna hosts an annual Herb Day on the first Saturday in May in conjunction with National Herb Day - an event that features the sale of thousands of fresh and organic herb plants, presentations by herbal experts on wellness, cooking, and gardening, and handcrafted products from local artisans, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to the City's downtown; and
WHEREAS: The City of Gahanna continues to embrace its title through the creation and support of community resources such as the Geroux Herb Gardens and the Ohio Herb Center, both of which serve to educate, inspire, and entertain residents on the versatile benefits of herbs; and
