A JOINT RESOLUTION AND PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY, AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE, JANUARY 20, 2025, IN THE CITY OF GAHANNA
BODY
WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a federal holiday on November 2, 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill introduced by Representative Katie Hall of Indiana to honor the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed annually on the third Monday of January to commemorate the birthday of Dr. King, a transformative civil rights leader who championed nonviolence and anti-poverty activism as part of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s; and

WHEREAS, This year's celebration carries the official theme "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365," recognizing Dr. King's enduring commitment to nonviolent advocacy for social justice; and

WHEREAS, The holiday serves as a meaningful reminder of the power of unity, love, and nonviolence in protecting the fundamental principles of freedom, justice, and democracy for all; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King poignantly reminded us, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," underscoring our connection and the nature of equality and fairness; and

WHEREAS, The City of Gahanna honors the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the National Day of Service by encouraging the residents of Gahanna to embody his vision by standing together for justice through peaceful advocacy, serving those in need, and spreading the message of equality throughout the year.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT JOINTLY RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL AND PROCLAIMED BY THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF OHIO:?

Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor of the City of Gahanna do hereby recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as January 20, 2025, and as the MLK Day of Service in the City of Gahanna.
