RECOGNIZING MARCH AS MENTAL RETARDATION/DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH.

Body

WHEREAS, mental retardation and developmental disabilities are conditions which affect more than six million American children and adults and their families; and

 

WHEREAS, the most effective weapons for the alleviation of the serious problems associated with developmental disabilities are public knowledge and understanding; and

 

WHEREAS, we encourage all our citizens to realize that people with disabilities are people with possibilities and should be afforded full access to community housing, employment, and leisure activities; and

 

WHEREAS, the potential for citizens with developmental disabilities to function more independently and productively must be fostered; and

 

WHEREAS, Northeast School and ARC Industries, Inc., located in Gahanna, provide for children and adults with mental retardation/developmental disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS, many businesses in the City of Gahanna have provided sites for community awareness and job skills for students attending Northeast School;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:

 

Section 1.  That the City of Gahanna recognizes March, 2001, as Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and that "People with Disabilities are People with Possibilities."

 

Section 2.  That this Council and Administration give full support to efforts toward enabling people with developmental disabilities to live productive lives and achieve their potential.

 

Section 3.  That this resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon passage by this Council and approval by the Mayor.
