TO SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE LITTLE DARBY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

WHEREAS, the proposed Little Darby National Wildlife Refuge (LDNWR) is an important conservation tool for west central Ohio and the Darby Creek watershed, which includes the Big Darby Creek State and National Scenic River; and

 

WHEREAS, the LDNWR will enhance the aesthetic and natural characteristics of parts of Madison and Union counties by restoring native oak savannah, prairie, and wetland ecosystems; and

 

WHEREAS, the LDNWR will enhance the quality of life for residents of Gahanna and the State of Ohio by providing opportunities to experience wilderness and outdoor recreation; and

 

WHEREAS, the a goal of the LDNWR as stated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service is to respect existing agricultural interests; and

 

WHEREAS, the US Fish and WIldlife Service intends to buy land using federal dollars from willing sellers only; and

 

WHEREAS, the US Fish and Wildlife Service will protect farmland and provide income to farmland owners in a farmland preservation area; and

 

WHEREAS, the LDNWR will provide habitat for many rate, threatened, and endangered plants and animals which currently live or historically lived in the area; and

 

WHEREAS, future generations of Ohioans will benefit from the establishment of the LDNWR;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:

 

Section  1.  That Gahanna City Council, along with the Administration, does hereby endorse and support the establishment of the Little Darby National Wildlife Refuge and supports habitat restoration of the maximum acreage possible.

 

Section 2.  That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect at the earliest date allowed by law.
