A RESOLUTION CELEBRATING EARTH DAY APRIL 22, 2024 AND COMMITTING TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE PLANET THROUGH ACTIONS TO ADDRESS THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF PLASTICS ON ECOSYSTEMS, WILDLIFE, AND HUMAN HEALTH
BODY
WHEREAS, Earth Day is observed annually on April 22nd to raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection and to celebrate our planet's natural beauty; and
WHEREAS, the theme for Earth Day 2024 is "Planet and Plastics," emphasizing the urgent need to address the global plastic pollution crisis and its detrimental effects on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health; and
WHEREAS, plastics, especially single-use plastics, contribute significantly to environmental degradation, with millions of tons ending up in our oceans, rivers, and landscapes, causing harm to marine and terrestrial life; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability in 1987 as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"; and
WHEREAS, the promotion of sustainable practices, including the reduction of plastic consumption, the encouragement of recycling and reuse, and the development of biodegradable alternatives, is essential for the preservation of our planet's health and the well-being of future generations; and
WHEREAS, sustainability encompasses not only environmental conservation but also economic and social dimensions, ensuring that our actions today do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day 2024 presents an opportunity for individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to commit to actions that reduce plastic pollution and promote sustainability in all aspects of life.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF OHIO:
