WHEREAS, Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska; and
 
WHEREAS, with the planting of more than one million trees, this event is now observed annually throughout the nation and the world; and
 
WHEREAS, the national holiday is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April; and
 
WHEREAS, trees and woodlands have a very special meaning and purpose to all mankind, and it is prudent that community leaders and businesses recognize the need to review and maintain this important balance of nature; and
 
WHEREAS, the City of Gahanna prides itself on being a city with a focus on preserving nature;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, STATE OF OHIO:
 
Section 1.  That this Council and Administration recognize April 26, 2013 as ARBOR DAY, and urge the citizens of Gahanna and the surrounding area to support efforts to protect and review the growth of trees.
 
Section 2.  That this Council commends the City Landscape Board, the business, civic, and service organizations, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the citizens for their continued cooperation in maintaining the Gahanna 2013 "Tree City USA" designation through enhancing and beautifying trees in the community.
 
Section 3.  That this resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon passage by this Council and approval by the Mayor.
