TITLE

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JUNE 1-7, 2024, AS NATIONAL CPR AND AED AWARENESS WEEK

BODY

WHEREAS, in 2007, the American Heart Association, in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, worked collaboratively to designate a national CPR and AED Awareness Week; and

WHEREAS, on December 13, 2007, Congress unanimously passed a resolution to set aside June 1-7 of each year as National CPR and AED Awareness Week to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans knew CPR and how to use an AED; and

WHEREAS, knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques or knowing how to properly use an automated external defibrillator (AED) can be the difference between life and death for those who have experienced sudden medical emergencies; and

WHEREAS, a cardiac arrest can occur anywhere, and it only takes up to four to six minutes without oxygen for the brain to experience damage, and therefore the time of response and proper execution of these measures are crucial in potentially saving many lives around the world; and

WHEREAS, according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, up to 356,000 cardiac arrests occur in the US each year, with 90% of these instances proving fatal, and CPR and AEDs are useful in helping people who have suffered ailments such as cardiac arrests, asthma attacks, diabetes, strokes, and allergic reactions; and

WHEREAS, National CPR and AED Awareness Week runs from June 1 - 7, 2024, and aims to stress the importance of these lifesaving actions to as many people as possible; and

WHEREAS, the actions of bystanders often play an important role in helping deal with such emergencies, and the knowledge of these methods; and

WHEREAS, learning and mastering CPR techniques and proper AED use so that they can become lifelines for those who have experienced sudden medical emergencies is an honorable and caring thing to do; and

WHEREAS, all City of Gahanna Parks & Recreation staff are currently certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED usage; the entire Division of Police received CPR/AED update training/certification through partners with paramedics with MTFD, and the Division of Police now has AED’s in all of its vehicles; and

WHEREAS, the City of Gahanna encourages all staff and members of the community to become certified through programming offered by the City or another community partner.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF OHIO:

Section 1. That this Council does hereby recognize June 1 - 7, 2024, as CPR and AED Awareness Week for the City of Gahanna.

Section 2. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect at the earliest period allowed by law.
