TITLE
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 2022 AS HUNGER ACTION MONTH AND HONORING GAHANNA RESIDENTS IN NEED (GRIN) FOR THEIR ROLE IN ADDRESSING HUNGER IN THE COMMUNITY FOR FIFTY YEARS
BODY
WHEREAS, according to the USDA, in 2020 38.3 million people lived in food-insecure households, including 6.1 million children; and
WHEREAS, while hunger affects people from all walks of life, the national non-profit Feeding America has noted higher rates of food insecurity during the pandemic particularly among families with children and communities of color; and
WHEREAS, Hunger Action Month takes place each September and is a time when people all over America stand with their food bank networks by raising awareness, volunteering, advocating, and donating to fight food insecurity; and
WHEREAS, locally, Gahanna Residents In Need (or “GRIN”) is a community organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger for residents in the Gahanna-Jefferson school district and the 43230 zip code; and
WHEREAS, in 2021, GRIN served 172,231 meals, provided 7,146 summer lunches, 22,946 weekend snack packs, and 510 school backpacks through 14,204 volunteer hours; and
WHEREAS, last month the GRIN pantry provided food for over 270 families in the Gahanna area community; and
WHEREAS, this year’s GRINiversary marks 50 years of addressing food insecurity in Gahanna, which started in 1972 as a community effort organized by the Gahanna Rotary and the Gahanna Ministerial Association.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GAHANNA, COUNTY OF FRANKLIN, STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That this Council recognizes September 2022 as Hunger Action Month and honors GRIN’s role in addressing hunger in the community for 50 years.
Section 2. That this Council urges citizens to support GRIN through volunteering time, donating food, or donating money to support, lend a hand, uplift, and fill the empty plates present within the community.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall be in full force and effect at the earliest period allowed by law.
